The Lateral Paramedic/Firefighter reports to the Company Officer to facilitate Emergency, Fire and Medical Services. The Lateral Paramedic/Firefighter performs assigned duties in accordance with established protocol with moderate supervision. In the absence of the Company Officer, the Lateral Paramedic/Firefighter shall report to the Acting Company Officer on duty.

  • Responds to emergency medical care calls as assigned for assistance to sick or injured people, treating them in accordance with Emergency Medical guidelines and certification.
  • Assesses nature and extent of illness/injury.
  • Establish and prioritize medical procedures.
  • Restores and/or stabilizes heart rhythms using defibrillator.
  • Monitors cardiac patient with electrocardiograph.
  • Initiates intravenous fluids to administer medications or body fluids.
  • Performs endotracheal intubations to open airways and ventilate patient.
  • Obtains and records patient vital signs.
  • Observes, records, and reports to physician patient conditions and reactions to treatments.
  • Responds to fire emergency calls as assigned, and performs tasks that may include search, rescue, ventilation, and suppression. Uses department equipment appropriately to extinguish fires of all types.
  • Drives and operates department aid or rescue vehicles as qualified and as appropriate to the scene of the incident.
  • Performs daily equipment tests and upkeep tasks, including routine equipment maintenance, to keep all equipment and apparatus in state of readiness.
  • Assists in performing routine inspections and re-inspections.
  • Participates in pre-planning fire tactics to improve service, rescue, and safety.
  • Checks hydrants and tests available water flow on a regular schedule or as needed and directed.
  • Participates as directed in training classes to maintain and upgrade knowledge, skills, qualifications and certification.
  • Performs apparatus, station and ground maintenance as directed.
  • Maintains necessary manual and computer records, entering data and generating reports as directed.
  • Performs work in accordance with all safety policies and procedures.
  • May be selected to participate in Special Operations Teams as qualified.
  • May make public presentations, conduct tours of the station, or assist in presenting training classes for other staff, volunteers, community groups, or fire personnel from other districts.
  • Performs other varied duties as directed and/or required.
  • Displays working knowledge of fire codes and nationally recognized standards appropriate to the fire service or understands how to research and reference this information.
  • Effectively communicates in a variety of situations and with a variety of medium with an ability that promotes co-worker and public trust.
  • Demonstrates quick and sound decision making skills.
  • Writes clear and concise reports.
  • Reads and interprets a variety of technical materials, including manuals and periodicals.
  • Demonstrates sufficient computer skills to enter data and generate reports.
  • Able to operate any and all department vehicles as assigned and qualified.
  • Able to knowledgeably use all department tools and equipment, including hand and power equipment as assigned and qualified.
  • Demonstrates sufficient mechanical aptitude to perform basic repairs and maintenance tasks required to maintain the operation of Fire Department equipment.
  • Possesses comprehensive knowledge of updated Uniform Fire Code requirements and associated fire safety inspection techniques.
  • Handles high levels of personal stress, maintaining composure and control of self and situation under a variety of adverse and difficult conditions.
  • Performs duties and maintains personal conduct, attitude and appearance that reflects professionalism and strictly conforms to policies, procedures and discipline within a “chain of command” system.
  • Works as a reliable team member, establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with co-workers and auxiliary professionals outside the department.
  • Able to memorize, recall detail, and identify objects.
  • Develops and maintains considerable knowledge of the geography of Snohomish Regional Fire & Rescue, its buildings and its street systems, and is able to apply this understanding when under stress
Minimum Job Requirements:
Age : 18
US Citizen : Must be able to legally work in the U.S.
High School Grad/GED : Yes
Ability to Read/Speak English : Yes
Prior Experience Required
  • High School diploma or GED
  • Valid driver’s license by hire date
  • Minimum of twelve (12) months consecutive full-time, career structural firefighter work experience
  • Must be currently employed, or have been laid off or separated/retired in good standing within the last twelve (12) months
  • IFSAC Hazmat Awareness and Operations Certification
  • IFSAC Firefighter I Certification
  • IFSAC Firefighter II Certification
  • Current Washington State (or state of residence) Emergency Medical Technician – Paramedic (EMT-P) certification; OR
  • Current National Registry Emergency Technician – Paramedic (NREMT-Paramedic)

Additional Requirements :

  • Successful completion of a recognized full-time, career structural fire academy within the last 15 years as determined by the SRFR Training Division. 
  • Members hired as a lateral paramedic/firefighter will attend a SRFR-oriented ‘onboarding’ academy
  • Completion of a 12-month probationary period
