About the Opportunity The Network Science Institute (NetSI) is hiring one Postdoctoral Research Associate to join the newly formed Complexity & Society Lab (&-Lab). The &-Lab is an interdisciplinary research group that develops tools, theory, and models for complex systems, with a focus on documenting and combating systemic disparities in society, particularly in public health and safety. The &-Lab is expanding to undertake a new grant-funded project aimed at analyzing inequalities within U.S. court systems. The project involves building interactive data tools to inform the public, policymakers, and researchers about municipal court policies and their impacts. This work complements ongoing research at the intersection of complex systems and data science. The research environment is highly collaborative, involving scholars from humanities, history, ethics, law, and policy, and working alongside other research groups at NetSI focusing on public health, mobility, AI, and network theory. This position is based in Boston and is funded until August 31, 2026, approximately a 2-year appointment. While the primary focus is on the criminal legal system, the successful candidate will have opportunities to develop their own research within a collaborative institute. Responsibilities Assist in initiating, executing, and completing studies related to the grant, including preparing research articles, presentations, and other scholarly activities. Participate actively in community events such as talks, workshops, and conferences, and engage with the broader NetSI community. Foster a safe, inclusive, welcoming, and collaborative environment. Contribute to career development activities, such as mentoring students and grant writing, where relevant. Qualifications The ideal candidate will have completed a PhD in any discipline by the start date, with experience working with large, complex datasets—covering data collection, management, analysis, and visualization for diverse audiences including the public, scholars, and policymakers. Programming skills are essential; Python is primarily used, but other languages are welcome. A solid understanding of statistics and a willingness to learn more are also required. Experience with web-based data visualization, especially geospatial data like maps, is preferred. The candidate should be prepared to lead and collaborate on research projects full-time under the supervision of a senior scholar.
